Director of Manufacturing Opportunity

Talon Recruiting has partnered with a market leader in innovative equipment solutions in the industrial, heavy equipment, and material handling sectors.  Together, we are searching for a Director of Manufacturing to join their team in either Regina, SK, Surrey, BC, or Edmonton, AB.

Purpose:
The Director of Manufacturing (DOM) is responsible for the ongoing planning development, execution and management of the Company's installation and fabrication resources. This includes the development of policies and procedures designed to increase productivity, assure quality, manage capacity, and mitigate production problems.

The DOM will work with other Directors and Managers in other departments to support and compliment other company initiatives. This position will oversee all facets of the Company's build and NSM process. Oversight will include, but not limited to, fabrication and installation capacity at on-branches, technical design team, and the assurance of standardized Company builds at all branch locations.

Major areas of accountability
  • Manage the distribution, scheduling and planning of installation and fabrication work within the different facilities and third party vendors with the goal of improving capacity, on time delivery and efficiency
  • Develop and improve processes and policies the company uses to manage the different builds within our facilities
  • Manage long-term strategic plans and tactical implementation of production systems across the company.
  • Support new product development and continuous improvement by integrating tools (e.g. Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, etc.) into processes.
  • Ensure ongoing development and training staff in problem-solving techniques and on-the-spot production troubleshooting. Improve production standards through time studies and other standard data development methods.
  • Develop a Quality Management process within the Company.
  • Ensure training for all installation/fab shop employees, recommend optimal staffing levels and schedules.
  • Select the appropriate capital equipment as needed, create business case, and then oversee purchase, installation, and start-up.
  • Manage working capital as it relates to installation material.
  • Identify areas for waste reduction.
  • Develop plant or process flow layouts to improve productivity.
  • Provide cost analysis as required by senior management Leadership Team.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with local, national, and international standards and legislation.
  • Ensure COR Safety Program is followed, and guidelines are enforced.
Major Requirements:
  • Strong inventory and production and team building management skills.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills for liaising and communicating with vendors, customers, and internal departments.
  • Practical experience with risk management, product testing, capability studies and control plans.
  • Training and knowledge of Six Sigma techniques, Kaizen, and Lean Manufacturing are desirable.
  • Highly motivated and self-directed capable of multi-tasking, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Detail-oriented and analytical thinker.
  • Able to interface directly with cross functional teams.
  • Ability to create and review technical documentation, including project plans, test procedures, and design documents.
  • Able to develop, review, and maintain metrics and audits.

  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office productivity suite.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Strong understanding of hydraulics, electrical and fabrication as it relates to truck-mounted equipment.
  • Travel will be required to various Company locations, suppliers, and customers.
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
Reporting Structure:
  • Reports to the Chief Financial Officer
  • Direct reports – Surrey Install Manager, Surrey Fabrication Shop Manager, Manager of Company design department
  • Indirect reports – Rail Division Shop Manager, Regina Install Manager, Regina Fabrication Manager, Edmonton Shop Manager
  • Key internal interactions – Leadership Team, Managers, Install Department, Service Department, Parts Department, Engineering Department, Sales Department and other Company facilities
  • Key external interactions – customers, industry / vendor contacts
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, experience, and attributes:
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field and/or a combination of education and work experience
  • At least 5 years of work experience in a Manufacturing/Production/Assembly Management role within a mechanical environment with a focus towards corporate strategy
